Incels, short for “involuntary celibates,” refer to individuals, primarily men, who struggle to form romantic or sexual relationships. While it’s understandable to feel frustrated or lonely at times, the incel subculture has evolved into something much darker. Some incels harbor extreme resentment toward women, blaming them for their personal lack of success in relationships. This toxic ideology can be deeply harmful not only to the individuals who subscribe to it but also to women and society as a whole.
One of the key ways in which incels are harmful to women is through their objectification and dehumanization. Many incels hold misogynistic beliefs, seeing women as objects for their own pleasure or as gatekeepers to sex and validation. This mindset reduces women to mere tools in a man’s quest for fulfillment, disregarding their autonomy, agency, and humanity. Such attitudes are harmful because they promote inequality and reinforce harmful stereotypes about women being subservient to men’s desires.
Additionally, the hostility that many incels express towards women often manifests in acts of aggression and violence. Some even idolize past perpetrators of violent attacks, such as Elliot Rodger, whose deadly shooting spree in 2014 was motivated by a desire for revenge against women who rejected him. These examples of violent incel behavior highlight the dangerous consequences of toxic masculinity and the objectification of women. When individuals are taught to see women as obstacles to their happiness or as “undeserving” of kindness or respect, it increases the risk of violence against them.
Moreover, the spread of incel rhetoric on online forums and social media platforms has further amplified these harmful ideologies. These communities often reinforce one another’s negative views and promote a sense of entitlement to women’s affection. The echo chamber effect that can occur in these spaces creates a cycle of resentment and reinforces harmful stereotypes. It also prevents individuals from seeking healthier coping strategies or emotional support, as the community may instead encourage further isolation and bitterness.
Incel beliefs can also contribute to a broader societal culture of misogyny and harassment. When individuals subscribe to these harmful ideas, it can influence how they interact with women in everyday life. Women may experience microaggressions, unwanted attention, or verbal abuse, all stemming from a mindset that undervalues and disrespects them. This can create an unsafe environment for women in public spaces and in their personal relationships.
Ultimately, the incel subculture perpetuates toxic ideologies that harm both men and women. For men, it fosters unhealthy relationships with their own self-worth and emotional well-being, while for women, it reinforces harmful stereotypes and increases the risk of harm. Challenging these beliefs requires fostering empathy, promoting healthy relationships, and dismantling the societal structures that allow misogyny and objectification to thrive. It’s crucial that we work toward creating a more inclusive, respectful world where all individuals can experience love, support, and understanding—free from the harm caused by toxic ideologies like those perpetuated by incels.
