After watching Tuesday’s debate between former President Trump and Vice President Harris, the two major presidential candidates for the upcoming election, there seemed to be no doubt in my mind who was the better contender. With one nominee ranting to a national audience about immigrants supposedly eating people’s pets and accusing his opponent of wanting to perform transgender operations on imprisoned illegal aliens, it was quickly revealed to the American people the trumped-up nature of the Republican campaign.
From the get-go, Donald Trump seemed to be intimidated by his female counterpart, even getting flustered by Harris’s attempt at a handshake. Trump visibly struggled throughout the debate, resorting to belittling comments about Harris’s campaign, such as calling her a “Marxist” and “the worst Vice-President in the history of our country.”.
An early question about the Supreme Court’s controversial repeal of Roe v. Wade showcased a stark contrast between the two nominees. Trump began his half-baked response with an attempt to take a jab at the Democratic party, saying they support abortions after birth and insisted repeatedly that absolutely everyone in America was in favor of getting rid of Roe. Harris quickly pounced back, calling Trump’s argument “insulting to the women of America” and passionately reassured Democrats that, as President, she will do everything to rid the country of what she calls the “Trump Abortion Bans”. The authenticity shown in her fiery response is what voters are looking for, a candidate that will fervidly defend their decisions and policies, not one that relies on mean-spirited insults and fear-mongering just to get their point across.
It is quite possible that none of this matters all that much, that the country is so divided that no one’s minds will be changed by the debate. Perhaps the Trump mania is too baked into the cake for his supporters to take issue with. Nevertheless, the derangement of the Trump campaign is becoming more and more evident to Americans and if even one mind was changed Tuesday night, it’s a step in the right direction.
